We are thrilled to announce that we are among the first institutions in the country to pilot the Level 2 Hydrogen Qualification!

Earlier this month, we were thrilled to welcome representatives from The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the awarding body for this qualification.

As the second college to offer the Hydrogen Qualification, our students are gaining a valuable head start in hydrogen-focused training.

Michael Yerbury, Hydrogen Technical Trainer at HEAT at Blackburn College, shared his excitement: “This is fantastic news as it keeps our curriculum ahead of industry trends, giving students hands-on experience with the latest advancements in Hydrogen and Electric Vehicle Technology.”

Recently I attended the Hydrogen Expo 2024 and here are a few things I brought away from the day

Hydrogen is set to play a huge role in transportation and Green energy supply for future generations, Hydrogen is well on the way to becoming a sustainable power source for transportation and we have seen some developments already from Toyota, Hyundai and BMW set to joint the hydrogen party 2025. However, infrastructure will play a vital role in shaping the direction of car transport and number of units sold on our roads. The HGV sector is set for an expediential rise in the number of Heavy transport vehicles to adopt either Fuel Cell technology or combustion engines running on hydrogen. One thing is clear is that hydrogen will play a pivotal role from cars trucks and aviation in the near future.

With the introduction of Electric Vehicles to our current vehicle market, consumers and the automotive industry of rapidly changing and investing in making the change to provide efficient Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) to the UK market.

There have been some initial resistance consumers regarding the current miles per charge of the vehicles on offer and had subsequently fuelled the big issue of range anxiety.

BEV technology has come a long way from the early days of Ni-mh batteries and although still widley used on Hybrid Vehicles, Li-Ion technology has become the choice of modern Vehicles providing a greater energy capacity equalling greater range, however even with current batteries increasing Kilowatt hours capacity, for some consumers it’s just not enough range.

Moving forwards may see advances in solid state batteries with Toyota announcing a 1000km range battery with 20% reduction cost to hit the showrooms in 2025 and the likes of Audi making significant headway in greater range and quicker charging times the race is on to provide what people want and simply is higher range vehicles at a cheaper price.
